Workmen's Compensation that covers your legal duty to your workers.

If an employee is injured, disabled or dies because of their work, you're legally liable to compensate them under the Employees' Compensation Act. Workmen's Compensation (WC) insurance funds that liability — medical costs, compensation and legal defence — so an accident doesn't become a personal financial burden. We arrange compliant cover at a competitive premium.

The basics

What is workmen's compensation insurance?

Workmen's Compensation (now called Employees' Compensation) insurance covers an employer's statutory liability to pay compensation when a worker suffers injury, disablement, occupational disease or death arising out of and in the course of employment. The policy funds that compensation, the medical costs and the legal defence.

What's typically covered

  • Compensation for work-related injury or death
  • Permanent & temporary disablement benefits
  • Medical expenses arising from the injury
  • Scheduled occupational diseases
  • Legal costs of defending a claim
  • Contract / sub-contract labour (opt-in)

Good to know

  • The liability is statutory — under the Employees' Compensation Act
  • Cover is based on your employees' wages & headcount
  • Compensation scales are set by the Act
  • Wilful misconduct or intoxication may be excluded
  • Accurate wage & headcount declarations keep cover valid

Exact terms are governed by the insurer's policy wording and the Act — we help you stay compliant.

FAQs

Workmen's compensation questions

Is workmen's compensation mandatory?

Employers carry a statutory liability for workplace injury or death under the Employees' Compensation Act. A WC policy funds that liability. We'll confirm exactly what applies to your business.

How is it different from Group Personal Accident?

WC covers your legal liability as an employer, on the statutory scale. Group PA pays a fixed benefit to the employee regardless of fault. Many businesses sensibly carry both.

How is the premium calculated?

Mainly on the wages and number of employees, adjusted for the nature of the work (its risk). Accurate declarations keep your cover — and any claim — valid.

Does it cover contract labour?

It can — with a contract-labour extension, sub-contracted workers on your site are covered. We recommend it for construction and project work.

Are occupational diseases covered?

Scheduled occupational diseases arising from the work are covered under the Act and the policy. We make sure the ones relevant to your industry are included.
